All manner of strange and exotic objects float into Bow Creek on the tide, and when Alfie’s body washes up between the barges moored under the shadow of Canning Town’s Iron Bridge everyone in Docklands is convinced that he was garrotted by a Chinaman with his pigtail.
As a member of the Flying Squad, the investigation of a murder does not fall within Detective Inspector Hawker’s remit, but Alfie being a wanted criminal, his main interest in the case is to make absolutely sure that the body is Alfie’s and then mark the file closed, but why is he so certain that Alfie’s killer is not Chinese? And what has an old photograph of a group of children got to do with it?
All the books in the Hawker series are complete self contained stories and may be read in any order, only the events of World War 2, which form a backdrop to the tales, are chronological.
