To write a really comprehensive history of London, and do so in a single volume which any one man would be strong enough to lift, would be difficult.Even were a task successfully performed it is doubtful if anyone would feel stron enough to read the book when all was done. In any case, such a history, to be really comprehensive, would have to be the work of a committee. All I attempt here is to present a general idea of London's growth from what it was to what it is to the manifestly considerable number of people who are interested. It is hoped that the bibliography at the end of the book will be of service to those who wish to go further into the subject at this point.
